I am an author of children‘s books. To everyone who knows that, it is first surprising that I am the one who created a book of congenital heart defects. So here is why this happened.
For my newest children’s book I was looking for a new organization to support with some of the book sales. I was referred to Michelle Duyck, who lost her daughter to hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS). From that moment on, I knew that my heart was beating for her and her organization.
So when I found out that there is much awareness needed, I decided to dedicate my time to creating a book of congenital heart defects. A book where families could tell us about their days and their lives. Their children with heart defects. Their surgeries, their hopes and their dreams.
Compiling a book of congenital heart defects wasn‘t always an easy task. A lot of energy has gone into this task. Supporting the families emotionally and with writing advice brought me to the edge at times. They had so much pain going on in their own lives, but it is me who had to deal with 50 different pains at the same time. Sometimes I thought this book of congenital heart defects might never happen.
I mourned so much for these little babies, I mourned for their loved ones and I mourned for all future ones who will have to fight to live. But in the end, creating this book of congenital heart defects was all worth it! Many already tell me that doctors and others asked them about a new book of congenital heart defects that is coming out. To me, this is simply amazing, and I hope I am able to support congenital heart defect research a great deal with the proceeds of this book of congenital heart defects.
