Children with Congenital Heart Disease

Children with congenital heart disease are at a major risk of dying young. This disease is the largest cause of death among adults in U.S.A. Through many studies and thousands of tests, scientists have found certain factors that children with congenital heart disease have. These are called the risk factors. Some of these factors can be treated, but some unfortunately can‘t.

A lot of these risk factors that affect children with congenital heart disease can be treated early in life. Other factors are sometimes passed on through family members. This is called hereditary. Children with congenital heart disease cannot be cured, but there are many procedures now that can change or control the risk of not living a long life.

Some things add to the dangers that children with congenital heart disease have. These are: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, obesity and physical inactivity.

Most children with congenital heart disease have problems leading a regular social life. Because they aren‘t allowed to engage in many sport activities, etc., they are not able to make new friends. Many of them are made fun of because of their setbacks. Some of those children with congenital heart disease are in my book, “Matters of the Heart.” They tell their story about the challenges they have growing up and how they overcame them.
