Heart Birth Defects

I have always worked with children with abilities. So when I approached my friends on MySpace about where to donate to a new book project, my friend told me about heart birth defects. Now, I think I am pretty educated about birth defects, but the ratio of heart birth defects really surprised and shocked me.

1 in 85 babies are born with heart birth defects. So if they are so common, how come I did not know about them at all? I learned that there are hardly any awareness campaigns for heart birth defects. I decided to create a book about heart birth defects called “Matters of the Heart.”

In the book, many families tell about their lives dealing with heart birth defects. My dream is to one day learn that there are significant tests being done to all newborns in order to detect these heart birth defects early. Too many are dying from these defects, and in my opinion that should not be the case in our century.

There is a non-invasive test already, but insurance companies are not willing to pay for it unless a doctor strongly suspects any heart birth defects.

There is much to do for our children, and we need to change the system fast because we are losing way too many due to heart birth defects.
